Christmas in July Blog Hop...my day

Here is a super easy quilt to make for when you need that last minute Christmas gift.  I know you aren't like me and wait until the last second to get everything checked off your list!  You probably make all of your Christmas gifts during the summer, so you can take your time and relax!  Ha :)

For this project you will need at least 6 different fabrics.  More is better because it is easier to lay out the blocks so things don't match.  I used up pieces and scraps so there isn't an even number of anything.  I am the area coordinator for Binky Patrol (www.binkypatrol.org) and we get donations of Christmas fabrics all the time.  I have two big boxes right now that are waiting to be made into Christmas stockings for the troops.  Last year the local high school partnered with us and we made over 300 stockings in a single day!  The National Honor Society kids filled them and then delivered them to the returning wounded soldiers that come through Travis Air Force Base.

Ok, back to the quilt...
You need to cut 4 1/2 inch squares and 4 1/2 inch by 8 1/2 inch rectangles.  You will need three sets of these per 12 1/2 inch block so just do a little math (it's ok, you can use a calculator, I won't tell anyone) and figure out how big you want the finished quilt.  I make a ton of kid size quilts so I would go with either 12 or 20 blocks.  This one was made with 24 blocks set 4x6 so it is big enough for a tall guy.  But, it you are really ambitious, you can make it King Size.  I made a King Size quilt once.  Yeah, once...

 Start by sewing one square to the end of the rectangle.  You can press these, or not.  I'm not a presser.  If I can make a quilt without having to get out of my chair, I'm a happy camper :)
 Then, sew two strips together, flipping so the squares are on opposite ends.

Now, sew the last strip on, with the square next to the rectangle.  This is your basic block.  I have no idea if this block has a name or not, but I just came up with it while trying to clean out some of my scrap boxes.  I had some 4 1/2 inch squares and was making 9 patch blocks.  Then, I came across the 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch rectangles and started playing around

Begin the layout of the quilt.  This can be the fun part or can drive you crazy.  I love having my kids help me with this as we all gather around the quilt and move blocks until they are perfect.  I'm sure they will tell their children about making quilts (or how I tortured them!)


Sew the blocks together, add a border and quilt!  I added 4 1/2 inch borders all the way around, but you can make them any size you want.  Finished size of my quilt is 56x80 inches.  Great for cudding up on the couch with and would be perfect in Red, White and Blues for a Quilt of Valor or any color you like.  This quilt took me about 4 hours to complete.  Like I said, I love making quick and easy quilts.

    I donate longarm quilting to American Heros, a group who provides a quilt for every wounded soldier who comes into the hospital at Lewis-McCord AFB in Washington. I also have made quilts (with the help of lots of wonderful quilters) for the group deployed to Afghanistan with my daughter (at her request as she was walking out the door!). I also make quilts for an Angel Flight pilot so he can give one to every patient he flies.

    I am both a last minute and a do ahead Christmas sewer. I have just finished a table runner for a Christmas gift, but I find I have a tendency to decide to do more at the last minute when I really shouldn't!

    I have never donated to a charity, perhaps after I retire and have plenty of time to quilt. My quilting time is very limited with working full-time. I would choose a charity at that time that I could make small quilts for children in hospitals.

    I am quite the procrastinator, I'm afraid... so, I definitely am a last minute person. Every year I tell myself that I am going to do better, but just seem to stay so busy that things tend to be put off until the last minute... Thank you for the tutorial!     That quilt reminds me of the ones my mom used to make. Each piece of fabric was from something she had sewn--love it! I'm definitely a last minute shopper, though some of my Think Christmas items will be gifts for sure. Of course I follow your blog. :O)

    Christmas has become year long for me. Decisions take longer and if I am making quilts, I want them ready long before Christmas comes. Some of the gifts, maybe canning or dinner baskets,can wait close to Christmas Eve.
    I really don't give quilts to Charity but I do give my quilts to family and friends. I don't consider myself really talented to enter fairs and my quilts are just OK.

    I do lots of charity quilts, mostly through The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints humanitarian, but often through other organizations sending things to Korea, Haiti, etc. Your quilt looks like a fun one to try for all the scraps I collect.

    I'm with you. I am having a difficult time getting motivated to do anything related to Christmas during the summer. I guess it's the calendar more than the weather because in CA the weather can still be nice in the fall and sometimes into November. Besides, I'm still trying to complete many UFO's that are not holiday related. I buy notions, batting etc from Joann's but have been disappointed by the selections of fabrics at the stores in my area. I find the larger stores have a much better selection, but then it forces me to complete the projects I have!

    I make quilts and give them to whoever I think might need one. I also supply quilts to our local CareNet (pregnancy resource center) and to our church for auctioning off to raise money for Christian education.

    I just joined your blog as an email follower. I retired from teaching kindergarten 31 years and teach preschool 2 days a week now. I'd like to say I make my Christmas gifts ahead of time but I'm always working on something else then. I'm usually finishing up things just in time. Love how your Christmas quilt came together.

    I forgot to say what my favorite quilt charity is! My daughter was adopted from S. Korea. We took a bunch of little quilts to our agency in Seoul when we visited several years ago. I've since made a few that I send to someone who takes tours to S. Korea.

    I have a goal of 12 premmie quilts ayear and they are given through my guild to 2 hospitals in Winston Salem. I also make about 18 nap blankets a year given to the lower income schools to the 4 year old. No batting is used and our guild donates 450 a year. ThenI give away throw size quilts to various organizations or needs as I am motivated. I have a longarm and that speeds up the quilting.

    I am the Queen of Procrastination so yea, last minute sewing goes on in my house all the time. Two years ago I was finishing the last part of a gift as the ones that gifts was for were coming in our back door to spend Christmas day with us. LOL Can't get much more last minute than that.

    I like the Quilt of Valor charity, and yes, I have one finished that was recently presented to a soldier who returned home a quadriplegic. What an honor to make a quilt for one man who gave so much for his country...for us!

    Our guild works twice a year on charity quilts. Our most recent finishes went to tornado victims in Kentucky. I try to begin quilting gifts way ahead of time.     I have made one charity quilt. It was made for a doctor's office that was a non-profit. This doctor's ministry was treating Lyme disease patients and risking her license in doing aggressive treatments. Her treatment saved my daughter's life! Thanks for the chance to win!

    I have made several charity quilts. They go to a local charity called Make Christmas Happen. They provide boxes of food for people in need, and also try to make sure everyone gets a gift. Lap-size quilts are really popular, and I have also donated pillowcases and tablerunners.

    charity quilts are a big part of the quilts I make...the quilts we make (a group of friends and I) go to either the homeless shelter or to someone who has had a fire, is terminally ill, or just needs a warm quilt as a hug...

    I have done charity quilts for Quilts for Kids and I also make them for our local sheriff and policemen to give to kids in crisis situations. I recently retired from teaching Family and Consumer Sciences. My students and I made quilts for the rest home and the local domestic abuse shelter.

    I make quilts for Project Linus plus Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. I also make quilts for "Comfy Quilts' as well as extras in odd sizes for the Premie NICU.
    My grandson was born premature and stayed in the NICU for almost a month. He has Cerebral Palsy but CP does not have him!

    My guild started a project a few years ago making lap quilts for the Wounded Warriors in the transition unit at our local army base, Ft. Bliss. We delivered them in person and brought cookies, books, toiletries, etc.

    I have quilted a couple of charity quilts on the long arm. But one of the fun projects our quilt guild did was to make dozens of pillow cases for Camp Rainbow Gold, a summer camp for children with cancer of all types. They get to take home a reminder of their days at camp. So much fun!

    Let see I have made preemie blankets for a hospital in PA and for the Reading Animal shelter when I lived there and was a part of a guild.
    But me & then 8 yr.son made pillowcases for a local hospital here in MI. and we pass them out & get to see their faces light up, making their stay just a bit brighter.

    I work with a team of about 200 women and they send tops, blocks, fabric and me and my friend take this supply and turn it into quilts for the children at the Masonic Home for Children and the Central Carolina Childrens Home.

    Nothing like seeing the sparkle in a childs eyes when you give them something to call their very own!
